NO-COAT FAQs
1. Why is it called NO-COAT?
The original NO-COAT drywall corner, ULTRAFLEX, does not require compound or “coating” at the apex of the corner. As a result, the brand became known as NO-COAT. When Structus Building Technologies developed other corners with the same proprietary mix of substrates (formulated surface paper, tapered co-polymer core, and joint paper), the trusted brand name of NO-COAT was extended to those products as well.
2. Which side of the corner goes against the drywall?
The joint tape side (with the NO-COAT logo) of the corner goes against the drywall.
3. What does SLAM stand for?
The term SLAM stands for “structural laminate,” the patented technology behind all
NO-COAT Structural Laminate Drywall Corners. SLAM also stands for “Saves Labor And Mud,” as NO-COAT corners deliver impressive bottom line savings over conventional corner beads.
4. What compounds should I use with your products?
The NO-COAT guarantee is only effective when the products are installed with All-
Purpose or taping compounds. Please see our warranty for specific details.
5. Do you still produce SmartSeries corner trim?
Yes. It has been renamed ULTRATRIM.
6. Do I have to use NO-COAT drywall finishing tools to install your corners?
All NO-COAT drywall corners can be installed by hand. However, NO-COAT corner rollers and applicators are drywall finishing tools designed specifically for our products, and are strongly recommended for the fastest, most accurate drywall corner installations.
7. Do NO-COAT corners “rough up” or “fuzz” during sanding?
Our formulated surface paper can be sanded vigorously without roughing or degrading.
8. Can you apply plaster over NO-COAT drywall corners?
We do not currently recommend using NO-COAT corners in plaster applications.
9. How is NO-COAT different from paper faced metal corner bead?
First, the NO-COAT Structural Laminate Drywall Corner is not a corner bead. Paper faced metal corners and metal corner beads have a beaded nose, which requires a deep fill coat of joint compound to create the illusion of a flat surface. Instead, NO-COAT corners utilize a unique structural laminate (SLAM) design with a tapered co-polymer plastic center that eliminates the need for deep and repetitive coats. We also guarantee our corners against edge deformation, the prevalent cosmetic flaw of the paper-faced bead. Last, NO-COAT drywall corners have a greater flange width, and can span greater gaps. We encourage you to browse the NO-COAT site to learn more about the features and benefits of the NO-COAT Drywall Corner System.
10. Can I use NO-COAT on flat seams?
We do not currently recommend using NO-COAT drywall corners on flat seams.
11. Do you only coat the flange?
NO-COAT corners generally do not require compound or “coating” at the apex of the corner. However, for outside 90s, we recommend coating the entire corner for maximum bonding to the drywall.
Inside off angles……only coat up to the corner, without going into the apex. (See detailed drywall corner installation instructions for ULTRAFLEX 450, ULTRAFLEX 325, and ZOOMA-FLEX).
Outside 90s………...coat the entire corner. (See detailed drywall corner installation instructions for ULTRATRIM Outside 90 drywall corners).
12. Will NO-COAT products match up to other drywall corner trim products such as paper face metal, corner bead and vinyl corners?
The entire NO-COAT Drywall Corner System has been carefully designed to integrate seamlessly. Using only NO-COAT corner products will ensure the optimum finished result.
13. How do you install the drywall corner transition pieces?
Our corner transition pieces can be installed using All-Purpose joint compound. They do not require glues or staples.
14. Do you still produce ULTRAFLEX Lite?
We no longer produce ULTRAFLEX Lite. Our ULTRAFLEX products are ULTRAFLEX 325 and ULTRAFLEX 450.
